Accidental African Slave Part 140

Author:

Day two of our third week, was much the same as Monday, only without the departure of the trucks. So I will skip to Wednesday, our third day of week three.

The day started out as usual, with our being awaken by the guard. We got ready and went for our breakfast, with the Foreman’s pep talk, and usual comments on our work. The Foreman then went for a look at our work site, and came back with a smile on his face. He told us it looked good for a Friday departure. This was really good news for Kwaku and Dauda, and I was happy for them.

We got our picks and shovel, and went to work trying to finish the job. We were really making headway with the digging, which ment I was doing a lot of shoveling. We filled almost three full ore carts, and I was working to fill the third one completely, when the guard said it was lunchtime. I let Kwaku and Dauda go on to lunch, while I finished loading, and delivering the third cart to the elevator.

I then joyed them for lunch, and they were excited about our progress. They could see the end of the job, by the decrease in the amount of ore, that we were removing. While I was content to remain at the table relaxing, Kwaku and Dauda were anxious to get back to work. I gave in, and followed them back to the work site.

We worked hard for the next five hours, and I had filled four ore carts, and taken them to the elevator. I then helped with the digging, until we had enough ore to fill another cart. I almost had the cart filled, when we were told to quit, that the Foreman had delivered our evening food. I finished loading the cart, and took it to the elevator, which is located beside our eating shed. I washed my face, arms and hands, and sat down for my meal.

The Foreman had gone to check on our progress, and see what was left to be done. He came back, and said he was sure, we would finish the next day. Needles to say, everyone was happy to hear that news. We just sat at the table listing to the Foreman and the guard, talk about tomorrow and our departure on Friday.

I was happy when they said it was time to get some sleep, becaus I really felt tired, and was looking forward to getting some sleep.

We went to the slave quarters, and got ready to sleep. Once the guard had chained us down for the night, he told Kwaku the Foreman wated to talk with him in the morning. The guard then left, locked the gate, and turned out the lights.

It was now time for our usual nightly conversation, and I suggested we make it short. I told them I was tired, and wanted to sleep. I think they felt the same way, because we didn’t say much, but just went to sleep.
