After I had been home for almost four months, I got a phone call from Africa. Araway was calling to let me know they now had cell phone access. He said the national government had opened local offices in the town, so travel to the Capital for all business is no longer necessary.
He informed me I would no longer be able to enter act with Ayitey, that he was no longer at the mine. Araway had given him his freedom when two of Ayitey’s uncles showed up. They had tracked their nephew down, and wanted to buy his freedom. They owned a plantation in a neighboring country, and wanted to take Ayitey there to become a future owner.
Araway had destroyed Ayitey’s bill of sale and ownership papers, so that he could leave as a freeman. He had refused to accept payment from the uncles, so he was not sold as a slave.
Ayitey will be trained in the operation of the plantation, and made a partner. Later he will inherit the plantation since neither of the uncles have family to inherit. One day he will be a wealthy man.
I had to admit I would hate not being able to get with Ayitey, but that I was glad he was now a freeman. I couldn’t help but wonder what his life would be like, and would he become a family man with children.
I plan to return to Africa in about nine months, but it’s not going to be the same. I will definitely miss not getting with Ayitey, but I have made many friends there.
I can now stay in touch with Araway and the others I have made friends with, and know what is happening. Orsty has promised to take me places and keep me entertained. I understand even the overseer has volunteered to help show me around the country. So I’m still looking forward to my return trip to Africa.
