The next morning after dressing, I joined Orsty in the kitchen and helped with breakfast. After helping to cleaning up the kitchen, I joined Araway for our trip to the mine. Not much was said, because I was thinking about surprising Dellevi at the mine. I was glad when we finally got to the mine, it seemed like such a long drive.
I quickly made my way down to the mining pit, and found the overseer. I told him not to tell Dellevi I worked in the pit, but ask him to help me surprise Dellevi. I told him to wait until I was at work, then bring Dellevi over and tell him he would be working with us. The overseer agreed, and said he would like to see Dellevi’s reaction to my being there.
I had been working for less than half an hour, when the overseer brought Dellevi. I kept my back turned at first, until the overseer had finished telling Dellevi he would be working with us. When I turned around and faced Dellevi, he was just starring in disbelief. Finally he spoke, and exclaimed that he thought I wasn’t a slave. I assured him I wasn’t a slave, but that I liked working in the pit with my friends. I explained to him how I had become friends with all the slaves, and that working with them was a way of bonding. I told him that I enjoyed the work, and that it was a way of staying in shape. I flexed and told him it was a good way to build a great looking body ... and I laughed.
He gave me a really good looking over, and commented on how great I looked. He said I had developed and looked stronger, than the last time he had seen me naked. I just laughed and told him that was why I liked working naked.
He ask me who was in charge in the pit while I was in the pit. The overseer quickly spoke up, and told Dellevi he (the overseer) was in charge. I told Dellevi I had to follow the rules, and do whatever the overseer told me to do. Dellevi ask if I got punished for not doing as I was told. I told him yes, and before I could say more, he ask if the overseer whipped me. I told him my punishment was worse, that Araway would pull me from the mine, and I would not be allowed to be with my friends. I told him I would not be able to have Kwaku train me, or enjoy our times together.
Dellevi smiled, and said no punishment with a whip, and I said no. I told him the overseer knows my punishment, so there’s no whip. About that time I heard the whip crak and felt a sting on my back, no real pain. The overseer laughed, and told me not to push my luck. I just laughed, and answered him with a yes sir. He then told us to get back to work, and show Dellevi what to do.
