The next morning at work, Araway received word that he must attend the required seminar, updating rules and regulations for mining operations. Araway always takes Orsty with him, and leaves the mine Forman in charge. So Master Ansah will be in charge while Araway is away.

Araway informed me that since Orsty would be going with him, he would have a housekeeper stay with me. He said she would do all the cooking and cleaning, and that I should do what I could to help. He informed me I would have to stay at home since I wasn’t allowed to drive, and he didn’t feel it was safe for me to ride a bike back and forth to the mine.

I objected because it ment I couldn’t work in pit with my friends, or train with Kwaku. I ask why I couldn’t stay in the slave quarters, since I worked and ate in the pit with the same men. Araway said it would create a lot of problems for the Overseer and his guards. He pointed out the slaves had to obey strict rules and regulations, show respect to the Overseer and to the guards. He said the slaves were required to work and obey the guards, then had to follow strict rules at night. Once they were locked in at night, they weren’t allowed to talk, only allowed to move if needing to use the toilet.

I begged and pleaded, and promied to follow all the rules that the slaves followed. I promised to show proper respect to the Overseer and to the guards, and I would follow their orders and do as told.

Araway finally gave in and agreed to let me stay in the pit and slave quarters, while he was gone. But he had another point to get across to me, and that was if I caused trouble rather than working, if I didn’t show respect and obey the guards, I would be removed from the pit. Araway said I would be taken to the Doctor’s office, where I would have to remain until he returned. He said I would not be allowed to leave the Doctor’s office without the Doctor being with me, and that I would not be allowed to leave the mining property.

I agreed to everything in order to stay in the pit and slave quarters. So Araway said he would take me down the next day, and explain everything to the Overseer and to the guards. He said he wanted them to know what I had agreed to, and what they were to do if I didn’t do as I had promised.
