The next day, after breakfast, Araway and I drove to the nine. Once there we proceeded to the elevator, where I entered the maintenance shed, removed all my clothing and accompanied Araway down to the pit.

I was surprised to be met by the Overseer and all the guards, but Araway had told the Overseer, while I was stripping, to assemble all the guards. Araway then addressed them all, with how I was to be treated while staying in the pit. They were told to treat me the same as the other men, and that I had agreed to follow all the same rules and regulations as the other men. They were told I had agreed to show them the same respect and follow their orders, the same as the other men. They were told if I violated any of the for mentioned pledges, that I was to be reported to the Overseer, and he would take action. It would be upto the Overseer to determine if I would be removed from the pit, and made to stay in the Doctor’s office, as punishment, until he Araway returned.

I was starting to feel uncomfortable standing naked in front of all those men, while Araway explained the rules I was to follow. I think the Overseer realized I was very uncomfortable in those circumstances. So he ask Araway if I could go on to my work station, but Araway said no, that he wanted me to remain. Araway said he wanted me to acknowledge, in front of all the guards, that I would work and cause no problems, be respectful, and obey orders. I did acknowledge what he said, and that I had agreed to everything he had told them. He ask if there were any questions, but no one had any questions.

Araway thanked them for listing, and said he was leaving me in their charge. That he hoped they could keep me out of trouble, and keep me safe from trouble. He then returned to the elevator. The Overseer then instructed the guards to get back to their duties. He then instructed me to get to my post, and do my usual work .... which I did.
