Accidental African Slave Part 123

Author:

When lunch time came, I went to the eating shelter and got my food. I then found Kwaku, and joined him for lunch, I then ask him if he knew what happened to Komla. He didn’t know what I was talking about, said he didn’t see or hear anything.

Once I had finished eating, I found the Overseer, and ask him about Komla. He told me that Komla had been rescued by his family. The man in the suit was a lawyer for Komla’s family, and he had paid for and arranged for Komla’s release. I was glad to hear that Komla was now a free man. I had just started to get acquainted with Komla, so I knew nothing of his history.

I found out from the overseer that Komla was from a very wealthy family. His father is a very important man in the country. He is very wealthy, owning two gold mines, a number of cocoa plantations, and into many other business enterprises. Sounds like Komla is going to live a very different life now.

Komla had run away from home, when he was younger, with a couple of other boys. They had gotten in trouble, by smuggling goods into the country, from a neighboring country. Komla was the one who was caught, and he gave a false name. He didn’t want his family to know about his arrest, but unfortunately he was in this part of the country. So he was processed and sold as a slave. I can’t understand his going through that, knowing his father could have taken care of the situation.

The Overseer told me, that Komla’s was being taken to the neighboring country, for surgery. The lawyer was taking him there to have his slave brand removed, before he was taken home. They didn’t want that done in this country, because they were afraid the story would be released to the public. The family didn’t want the publicity, and it would ruin Komla’s chance of finding a wife and raising a family.

I went back to work, and when the Overseer had me join Kwaku for our workout, I told Kwaku what had happened. He was really surprised, and said he thought he knew the name of Komla’s family.

Kwaku and I had a nice workout, and we were both exhausted. We just lay on the ground talking about Komla, until the Overseer cam and hosed us down. I then went to the elevator for my trip to the top. I quickly got dressed and joined the Doctor in his office, to wait on Araway to take me home.

When Araway came for me, we walked to his truck, for the ride home. Araway told me not to tell anyone about what happened with Komla. He said for the sake of Komla and his family, the whole matter was being covered up. He said all records of Komla’s past as a slave was being erased. Araway said he turned all his records, concerning Komla, over to the lawyer, for his disposal. Araway did not accept any money for Komla’s release, so there would be no record of such a transaction.

When we got to Araway’s house, I went in and cleaned up, before joining Orsty in the kitchen. As I helped Orsty get the evening meal ready, he ask me how things went with Komla? I told him we had started work together, and had reestablished our friendship. I didn’t say anymore, because.I wasn’t sure Araway would want Orsty to know the story of Komla’s release.

After our supper, and helping Orsty clean the kitchen, I quietly ask Araway about telling Orsty about Komla. Araway said he would tell Orsty later, and that I was not to let on like I knew what happened.

I went in and got ready for bed, wrapped a towel around my waist, and joined Orsty on the back porch. He had our fruit drinks ready, and a plate of cut melons. He ask me a few more questions about Komla, and I told him all I could. I hope the questions about Komla won’t keep coming up. I think I will start talking about someone else, so we can switch the conversation.

Araway joined us, and to my surprise, he sat down and joined us for awhile. We just had some idle talk about nothing in particular. Then Araway said it was time to get some sleep, so we all went to our rooms for the night.

More later.
