Accidental African Slave Part 137

Author:

I won’t say much about Wednesday or Thursday, days three and four, of my stay in the second week as a slave. Nothing happend either day, that was different from the preceding two days.

Friday came, and while everyone was looking forward to leaving the next day, the Foreman determined more time was needed to finish the job. So it was decided, that we would be there for a third week.

We got up on Friday, and prepared for our breakfast, and went to the shed. Once the food was brought down, the Forman returned to the top, there was no pep talk. I thought that was strange, he always stayed and gave us a pep talk, and praising us for our work.

Once we had finished, it was time to get ready for work, so it was back to the slave quarters. Once we had finished cleaning up, it was time to start the days work. So we received our tools, and headed to the work area.

When we started work, I was looking things over, and I had my doubts about finishing the job today. I didn’t say anything, because I didn’t want to discourage Kwaku and Dauda. I knew how much they were looking foreword to getting back to Araway’s. I started using my pick, and when we had enough ore piled up, I started shoveling the ore into the cart.

We worked this way for the next four hours, until lunchtime. We took our lunch break, and waited for our food. When the Foreman came down with the food, he sat down across from us, and started his pep talk. I listened, enjoying the accolade we were receiving from the Foreman. Once we had finished eating, the Foreman announced he had bad news. He informed us we would not be leaving Saturday, and would be starting a third week next Monday.

The disappointment was taken rather hard by Kwaku and Dauda. It didn’t really bother me that much, because I had expected to hear that news. I could tell there was more ore than had been anticipated, and that we couldn’t finish this week.

While Dauda and Kwaku have really been looking forward to getting back, I have been enjoying my time with the two of them. So I’m not really upset about having to stay longer. True. I do miss some of the people and things back at Araway’s, I’m not as disappointed as my companions.

We started back to work, and you could freel the difference in the mood of Kwaku and Dauda. They were working as hard as before, but it wasn’t a cheerful feeling, but one of desperation. They just wanted to finish as soon as possible, so they didn’t have to stay any longer, than was necessary.

The next five hours seemed to drag by, and we were all glad when our workday was over. I told Kwaku I wanted to do my training, so the time would go faster. He seem a little reluctant at first, then agreed. I think he realized we needed to stay busy, and not think about our disappointment.

When we started with my training, I decided to act very enthusiastic inorder to keep Kwaku focused on my training. I think my enthusiasm, either woke Kwaku up, or made him mad. Because he soon started getting rough with me, and I really had to be alert, or I got a nasty hit or fall. I was glad when the guard brought Dauda, and gave us our hose shower.

We then went for our evening meal, and the Foreman stayed, trying to comfort us, because he knew we were disappointed. He gave us the usual pep talk, about what a great job we were doing, and hopefully we could get things done faster. After the talk, I heard the Foreman tell the guard, that the dumb one never shows any reaction. He said it seemed like I just went along, and didn’t mind what happened. Kwaku heard what the Foreman said, and he kidded me about it later.

After the meal and the Foreman’s pep talk, we went to the slave’s quarters to get ready for te night. It was a very somber time for my friends, and not much was said.

After Dauda and I had been chained for the night, the guard said he was sorry about our delay in leaving. He then left , locking the gate and turning out the light. Usually this is the time the three of us have our nightly conversation, but tonight no one seemed in the mood to talk. So we just said goodnight and went to sleep.
