Accidental African Slave Part 142

Author:

I was awaken Thursday morning by the guard opening the gate. He ask if we were ready for our last day, and said the Foreman had everything packed.

We got read for our breakfast, and followed the guard to the dinning shed. The Foreman brought our food, then quickly returned to the top. He was busy getting everything together for his trip to Araway’s mine. The guard told us, that they hoped to leave early tomorrow.

Once we had finished eating, we followed the guard and retrieved our picks and shovel. We then went to our work station, and started extracting the ore. Once we had enough ore dug, I took the shovel and loaded the ore cart, then took the cart to the elevator. Once the ore reaches the top, locally hired villagers, load the ore onto the large truck.

I returned to digging until we had enough ore to load a cart, and I loaded the cart, we just kept repeating this all morning. We finally finished extracting the ore after about three hours. Kwaku and Dauda went to the dinning shed, while I finished loading the last cart. I took the cart to the elevator, then joined Kwaku and Dauda at the shed. The dinning shed is locate beside the elevator, so that it’s easy to bring down food.

While we were sitting there, the guard told Kwaku the Foreman want to see him. So he had Kwaku wash and dry, then he gave Kwaku clothes to wear. The guard then accompanied Kwaku to the top. Kwaku didn’t return until lunch time, and said he had been talking with a friend from his village.

I herd the elevator start down, and the Foreman was bringing our food. There was another man with the Foreman, and he looked over at me. He then commented.that the Foreman had told the truth, he did have a white slave. Kwaku then introduced the man, as Vinar, a friend from his village. Kwaku, intruded me as his friend, that he was training to be a wrestler, so I stood up and greeted his friend. I stood up so Vinar could get a good look at me, because he had been trying to look at me. The Foreman and Vinar then returned to the top.

Once we had finished eating, we returned to the work area, and put things away. We watched Kwaku’s friend leaving over the crest of the hill. We were told we could return to the slave
quarters, or stay at the shed. I decide to just lay on the table, there at the shed, and enjoy the breeze from the river. Kwaku and Dauda decided to stay with me, but Kwaku didn’t like the hard table, so he went to the slave quarters.

While Dauda and I were laying there, a light rain started to fall. I still had some dried sweat and salt on parts of my body, so I went out and stood in the rain to washed off. It wss stil raining when the Foreman brought our food down. He commented, he hoped the rain didn’t interfere with our leavig the next day. We sat there.watching the rain come down for awhile.

The guard said it didn’t look like the rain was going to let up, so he decided to take us to the slave quarters. He got an umbrella, and started walking to the Slave quarters, Kwaku took off running, and Dauda and I just started walking with the guard. We were naked, so I little rain was no problem we thought. Then we heard a crash of thunder, and a large flash of lightning, so we took off running.

Once we were all in the salve quarters, Kwaku laughed about Dauda and my panic look. He said that was the reason he took off running, he could see the lightning in the distance.
The guard said he wasn’t going to chain us tonight, so he locked.the gate and turned off the lights.

We started our usual nightly conversation, and we were talking about what the Foreman had said. We were hoping the rain wouldn’t interfere with our leaving tomorrow. Kwaku was trying to get a good look outside, to see if the rain was letting up. Dauda said he was praying, that we get to leave tomorrow, then we lay down and and went to sleep.
