I Love Corey chapter 5
One of the others asked how they felt. They started passing them around. They weren't really that sexy, just bikini briefs in a satin like material and red. I've got better ones. I had only dug them out because they were cool. I got an idea. While we had managed to win our games so far, the kids were capable of playing better then they had.
"All right you knot heads, listen up. Since you all seem interested in my undergarments, I'll make you a deal. Make it to state playoffs this year and I'll get you all a pair like that in the color of your choice."
"What colors do they come in?" Marty asked.
"I'm not sure. I've got them in black, blue, red and teal" I replied. "There are some others and I'll find out and let you know."
I went into the office and got another pair of briefs and finished dressing. I grabbed the stapler and when I managed to get the red ones back stapled them to the bulletin board.
"I'll put a list underneath with a place for your name, color and size" I told them.
I don't suppose many of the kids had seen any like mine. I found I couldn't buy them locally so got them in the city when I needed new ones. Living in a rural area limits some of what is available.
They finished dressing and left. Corey picked up the stuff to be washed and I worked at my computer. When he was done I checked the time.
"We've just got time to get to your doctors appointment." I told him.
I had made an appointment last week to get his leg checked out and see what exercises he should be doing. I'd made it with Dr. Vince Logan who does the team physicals and is Marty's father.
We jumped in the pickup and with the air conditioner on full headed for the hospital. Dr. Logan was on duty this evening so I could get a later appointment for Corey.
When we got there we had to wait about fifteen minutes while Dr. Logan finished stitching a finger. When he got to us he started a very through examination of Corey's leg. I had expected a short one and some direction on what physical therapy to use. After about a half hour of feeling and manipulation of Corey's leg he decided he needed some x-rays and sent him to radiology. After Corey left, Vince turned to me.
"Sam, what the hell is it with you? Marty is always talking about you this and you that. The latest is something about shorts."
I laughed and explained. As we sat there batting the breeze he asked me why I was the one who had brought Corey in rather then his parents so I filled him in on what I knew.
"Do you always take this much interest in your students or is he an exception?"
I'd never really considered it in that way.
"I'd say I always take an interest in the students. Kind of like you take an interest in your patients. Sure, some you like better then others but they all deserve your best."
While he was thinking about my reply Corey returned with the x-rays. He looked at them for a while. Then he got on the phone and asked if the MRI was free. When told it was he sent Corey down there. He told me it would take about forty-five minutes to an hour to run it and after that we should go have dinner and come back. He thought he would have some answers then.
By now I could see that the evening was getting away from us. Guess we would just have to put up with it. Besides, it was pretty obvious that by the end of the day Corey's leg really bothered him. I hoped he would come up with a way to help.
When the MRI was over we left. After we discussed it we decided to have Chinese food. The local restaurant wasn't great but was bearable so we headed over. By the time we had finished dinner it was almost nine. We went back and Dr. Logan was with another patient. He finished with her at nine-thirty and got to us.
He had good news and bad news. The good news was that Corey's leg could be made almost as good as new. The bad news was it would take surgery to do it. He explained that when it was healing some things had grown together wrong. With surgery and some therapy it should be fine. Corey wanted to know if he would be able to play sports again. Vince assured him that he would.
"So Vince, when can you do the operation?" I asked.
"First, I'm not going to do it. It calls for a specialist. Second, you can't authorize it. His mother must. Third, who is going to pay and how?"
I hadn't thought of that. I doubted that Mrs. Babcock would be able too. I wondered what provisions she had for health care.
"About what would it cost?"
He thought for a short while. "About twenty-five to thirty thousand."
Corey's face fell.
I asked him how long recovery would take. A couple of months was his estimate. I told him we would get back to him and we left. It was almost ten. This was later then I normally kept Corey out. He was very quiet on the way home.
When we got there he came in to pick up some things he had left and I hit the button on the answering machine. As he was about to walk out the door his mother came on saying she wouldn't be able to make it back tonight and asking if I would keep him again. I noticed that there was music in the background and no number I could reach her at. While I was thrilled to have Corey again, I was more then a little ticked off at her for trying to take advantage of me.
