My German Lover, Part 22

(Part 4 from 4. Fiction.)

"I understand!", the Vicar answered, grinning...

Paul walked over to Mrs & Mr Bloomfield and kissed them both on the cheeks...

"Don't worry... I'm taking care of everything... You'll see me soon again...", Paul said to them...

"We love you Paul... You're like a son to us...", they both answered... "And thanks to you too...", Mr Bloomfield said to Will and Lutz... "God bless you all for what you did tonight..."

As he was leaving the Presbytery, Paul turned, looked at the Vicar, smiled to him and said:

"I knew I could count on you, monsieur le Curé! Vous êtes un saint homme! (You are a holy man, Vicar...).

"Oh! No! I'm only a poor Vicar, trying to do what's right in life..."

"Here, Father!", Paul said, as he gave the Vicar a thick envelope... "You'll find enough money inside to cover all the expenses and all of their needs... Don't spare, please... I'll be in touch with you as soon as I can..."

"Your Grandmother would be proud of you, son... May God be with you!", the Vicar answered.

"Thanks, Father!"

On the way back to Paris, everything went fine... the soldiers were no longer there, and they had no problem getting back to Paul's mansion.

"...It's five o'clock... It's been a long night! Let's go to bed! I'll try to get some sleep, before I go to work!", Will said...

Later, they were awaken by someone knocking on their bedroom door...

Paul went to the door, opened it, and saw madame Louise, standing there in the corridor...

"Oh... Good morning madame Louise", Paul said...

"I'm sorry, Sir... to wake you up like that... but... we have two gentlemen downstairs... and they insist... they want to talk to you... they even questioned me..."

"Who are they?"

"I don't know, Sir... Germans, I tkink..."

"Oh? And why did they questioned you?"

"I don't know, really... They asked me a few questions concerning our neighbours..."

"Our neighbours? Which ones?"

"Mrs & Mr Bloomfield..."

"Oh? I wonder why?... And what did you tell them?"

"...Nothing! I told them I had not seen them recently... and that I didn't know where they were..."

"Oh, well... I guess I will have to get dress, then see these gentlemen... Please, show them to my study... I shall meet them there in a few minutes..."

Paul closed the door, turned and looked at Will...

"The Gestapo!", Will said... "They know..."

Obviously, Will was frighten...

"What are we going to do?", he asked Paul, with a quivering voice...

"You go back to sleep! I'm gonna take care of these bastards...", Paul said, with a very calm voice...

"...I think you don't realize who they are...", Will answered...

"Oh yes, I do! Perfectly well! Now, stay calm... And stay here!"

Paul got dress, then went downstairs...

He walked over to his study, opened the doors and saw two Gestapo officers, dressed in trench coat and hat, one of them sitting at his desk as if he was the owner of the place...

Paul walked in, looked at the officer sitting at his desk, then said to him:

"This is my desk you're sitting at... Get the hell out of that chair!"

(NOTE: When Will and Paul told me the story of their life, they gave me many details concerning that night they had been through! Years later... they were still shaking, thinking about what had happened in Paris at the time... and later, when I told them I wanted to write something about their life, they made me swear I would tell about that night! They didn't want people to forget that those dreadful events did occur... Some people in Paris sold their Jewish neighbours over to the Gestapo or the Police... But some others, like Will and Paul, helped some to get away... I still remember what Paul told me at the time: "You would never think a thing like that could have happened in Paris! But it did! And it can happen anywhere... any time...". So I kept my promise to them, and I wrote about that dreadful night... even if there is no sex into this story... I hope you will understand! It was important to them... and I share their view! Thanks!
